Medical expense changes of outpatient and inpatient who insured long-term care insurance

Abstract
As supporting the elderly has become a social issue according to the low fertility and aging society, government has implemented long-term care insurance since July, 2008.
The purpose of Long-term care insurance is to provide the long-term medical care benefits for the elderly, who is in a difficult circumstances on grounds of ill health or senile disease, and lessen the burden for dependents and improve the better quality of life.
In other words, government makes an effort to lessen the household burden in the recognition of long-term care insurance as national or social responsibility.
Using Korea medical panel data from 2009 to 2015, the purpose of this study is to analysis how outpatient and inpatient medical expense has changed according to the uninsured taking out the long-term care insurance.
The results showed that outpatient medical expenses decreased if uninsured takes out long-term care insurance compared to when they didn¡¯t, and it decreased as insured period increase. On the other hand, inpatient medical expense didn`t show statistically significant result.
Implications of this study are that outpatient medical expenses of long-term care insurance insured have decreased, and there is a differentiation of analysis method that 8 years medical panel data are used.
